Montecassino Abbey and Gaeta Private Day Tour from Rome with Lunch

Montecassino Abbey and Gaeta Private Day Tour from Rome with Lunch

600€ per person

This tour is for sure “outside” the usual touristic areas. The Abbey of Montecassino is one of the most known Abbeys in the world. In 529 Saint Benedict chose this mountain to build his monastery. In February the Abbey 1944 a bombardment almost flatted it. According to a legend, when Jesus died on the cross, the Jerusalem temple veil was torn causing three deep cracks into the rock of what today is known as Split Mountain of Gaeta. On top of this promontory stands the Sanctuary of the SS. Trinity. At the left side of the church, one of the cracks leads to the Turk’s Cave, pilmgrinage and enchanting tourist destination, linked to other stories and relevant personalities.

    A visit back in time.
My father-in-law was at Monte Cassino in 1943 when the Allies invaded Italy so this was a trip to see what he had talked about so often. We came to understand that ordeal better. But we also visited an area that is not often visited by international tourists let alone Italians. It was a unique experience pulling back the curtain on the vanished monastic life. The vistas from this highpoint are fantastic.

MONTECASSINO
Severely damaged by one of the bloodiest battles of World War II, the Abbazia di Montecassino (Abbey of Montecassino) was founded by St. Benedict in the 6th century, and is considered one of the best-known monasteries in Christendom. The Abbey of Casamari in the territory of Veroli is another example of Cistercian architecture in central-southern Italy, immersed in an enchanting landscape, framed by the mountains.
GAETA
Home of ancient Italic populations such as the Ausonians and the Samnites, Ciociaria includes the area of the Ernici and Ausoni Mountains, and the Liri and Sacco Valleys that lead to the Gulf of Gaeta. The River Cosa, running along the rise of Frosinone before flowing into the Sacco River, has always been important to the city's history, attested by the finds from the necropolis discovered along the river's course. The springs that gushed from the ground signify that the river was the city's only water supply source, even in later periods.
